Picture this: a Colorado Bluebird Sky (just like in the song), warm sunshine hitting your face, freshly groomed snow and music bumping from the DJ. This is how Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Opening Day 2015 kicked off!
Every year we count down the days until we can strap on the ol’ planks and go racing down the hill again. With later than normal snowfall this year, people were getting worried, but Ullr came through and gave us 13+ inches of snow the past week — perfect conditions to open up Peak 8!
Festivities started off at 8 a.m. with DJ DC bumping a variety of music (including bluegrass funk) from the Red Bull DJ Truck, a free photo booth and free cinnamon rolls! While time ticked by, the lift line grew bigger and bigger in anticipation of a great season. Right before 9 a.m. the first chair took off with special guests U.S. Army Sergeant Keith Deutsch and daughter Ava in the seat of honor.
Many worry that early season conditions are rocky and icy; well, this early season isn’t! Coming down the hill the snow was fluffy, and I didn’t see — or hit — a single rock! Breckenridge is also working hard to make snow in preparation for the Dew Tour Mountain Championships and to open up the rest of the mountain! (Can’t wait!)
The best part about opening day isn’t the free stuff or getting first chair; it’s about getting together and sharing the best day of the year with your friends. Many of us up here in the mountains work and travel all summer, but once winter hits it is back to mountains to enjoy the snow! I would have to say Opening Day and Gaper Day (every April at Arapahoe Basin) are the best days to enjoy with friends! Each is filled with excitement, laughter and lots and lots of silly photos.
Every Summit County ski resort has an Opening Day filled with activities and free giveaways. It’s something that everyone should experience at least once!
