It’s winter in Breckenridge! Which means the mountains are covered in brilliant white snow, Main Street is alite with Christmas lights, and the pine trees are covered in snow. All of these spectacular sights provide outstanding backdrops for pictures. In this blog you will find some of the best places around Breckenridge to capture some awesome photos that will create memories that last a lifetime.
One of the top spots in Breckenridge to get some unforgettable photos is the Blue River Plaza. Located in the center of Downtown Breckenridge, Blue River Plaza is a beautiful plaza that provides excellent views of Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Ten Mile Range during the daytime. After nightfall, the plaza glows brightly with hundreds of strands of white Christmas lights that make using a flash optional and, in most cases, unnecessary. Especially during the night, the Blue River Plaza provides an excellent winter backdrop. If you are lucky enough to stroll through the plaza during a snowstorm, make sure to grab a quick picture as the snowfall refracts the light from the falling snow providing a beautiful soft light on the subjects in your photograph. The added depth provided by the falling snow is a bonus! For a great shot during the day, cross Main Street and take your photo from Washington Ave.
Another great photo hot spot is Sapphire Point. Just a short drive from Breckenridge is one of the most stunning overlooks in the county. Sapphire Point is a popular wedding destination due to its beautiful backdrop against Lake Dillon and the numerous mountains that surround the area. Once you park you can either take a short walk the adjacent hillside or you can walk the popular Sapphire Point Trail that makes a short loop and affords some amazing views. Try to take photos from this destination on a clear day so you can capture crystal clear views of the mountains in your photos.
If you’re lucky enough to be skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort, make sure you get some photos of your group while at the top of the mountain. One of the easiest ways to get a great photo taken of you and your group is to catch one of the numerous Epic photographers at the top of the lifts in Breckenridge or Keystone. The photographer scans your pass, snaps a few photos, and then uploads them to your Epic account. You can view your photos the same day after you log into your account.
Not into skiing but still want some action shots of the family? Take them sledding at Carter Park! This local sledding hill is great for catching some action shots of the kids faces as they fly down the hill. Make sure to increase your shutter speed so you get a nice clear image and avoid blurring, unless you want to make it look like the kids are sledding really fast.
If you’re looking for something a little more artsy, head out onto one of the numerous trails around Summit County and take some photos while surrounded by pine trees. A good rule of thumb when trying to add some depth to your photos is to stack your subject against trees. Find a thick growth of pine trees and position your subject within them. Have a tree close to the camera and to the side of the frame and then focus on your subject that is situated a small amount past the branches of the tree. This will provide a blurred look to the branch while your subject remains clear.
