Five Reasons Spring Skiing is the Best

While it may seem like winter skiing is never coming to an end with this snowy weather we’ve been experiencing, some would argue that the best is still ahead: spring skiing! Those sunny days and the softer, more forgiving snow can make for best of part of winter on the mountain.

We’re going to give you five reasons why skiing/riding in the springtime is the best — and we have a feeling you’ll agree!

1. Sunshine and “google tans”! Need we say more?
While powder days are all the rage during midwinter, bluebird days are what we look for in the spring. Not only can you shed all those layers, you can also get a sweet goggle tan that all your friends will be jealous of. Flying down the mountain in a t-shirt is also one of the best feelings in the world … and if you haven’t experienced it, you need to! Just make sure to pack the sun screen, you’ll need it, too.

2. Learning is Easier
Whether you’re brand new to skiing/riding or just trying to brush up on your skills, spring skiing is the best time to learn (or relearn) how to get down the mountain. You want to be warm and comfortable when you learn, and a bluebird day is always perfect for that! Skiing powder is difficult and makes for a longer, steeper learning curve, meanwhile, skiing on groomed snow provides the perfect canvas for beginners to practice. You won’t slip out as easily when turning, and falling on a soft groomer feels much better than falling on ice. Trust us on this!

3. Cold drinks on the patio, anyone?
One of the best things about skiing on a spring day is taking a long lunch break at one of the on-mountain patios and having an ice cold drink. We love nothing more than sitting in the sunshine watching other people come down the mountain while relaxing over lunch and drinks. A few of our favorite spots are the T-Rex Grill at Copper Mountain at the base of the Timberline lift and the T-Bar at Breckenridge at the base of Peak 8. Ski on in, put your skis in the rack, and enjoy! Warmer temperatures are what these patios were made for.

4. Slush snow is awesome, and so are the prices
Even if you’re a powder lover, you’ve got to admit that you love some slush in the spring. Spraying your friends with it is also a plus, especially if they’re skiing/riding in swim suits (yes, people do that, although we don’t recommend it for beginners). The prices will also start to drop in the spring; including airline tickets, lodging and lift tickets. Many of the resorts have post-season pricing, so you won’t have to pay top dollar for a day ticket to ride the slush. Some resorts, like Arapahoe Basin, will also start selling their season passes for the next season and include unlimited skiing/riding for the rest of the current season. This is a great deal if you don’t already have a season pass!

5. Spring Events are the Best
There are tons of events that take place during the spring. From small time shows at A-Basin to big name concerts at Breckenridge to town events that take over Main Street. There are no shortage of events to celebrate the warming weather of spring. Check out all the events going on by checking out the events calendar from your favorite towns or resorts. GoBreck has an excellent events calendar that's updated constantly.
